Birth Declaration
In health establishment, the head of the hospital or in absence, the medical officer, or any person who witnessed the delivery, can declare the birth. As regards home births, even though it is not spelled out in the law, the traditional ruler is expected to declare all births in his village
After delivery, the person referred to above has 30 days to declare the birth and notify it to Bamenda City Council Civil Status Registry. Where the birth is not declared within 30 days, the parents have an additional period of 60 days within which to make the declaration before Bamenda City Council’s Civil Status Registry
After 6 months, a birth may be registered by Bamenda City Council Civil Status Registry only by virtue of a declaratory judgment from a competent Court of First Instance
Sanctions are provided for, against any person who, though bound to declare birth and for no legitimate reason fails to do so, or makes false or inaccurate declaration.
